How to choose the right urn: a step-by-step checklist
If you already understand the basics of size, material, and placement and just want a quick, practical way to land on a decision, work through the checklist below in order. Each step narrows your options until you're left with a short list to actually browse.
The checklist
Find the most accurate weight available before passing, for a person or a pet. This single number determines the minimum size you need, so get it as close as you can before moving on.
Run that weight through our urn capacity calculator, or check the adult or pet size chart. Write down the recommended cubic inch number — you'll filter by this next.
An urn for a shelf or mantel just needs to look right to you. An urn for burial needs to be made from a burial-appropriate or biodegradable material. An urn for scattering may not need to be a traditional sealed urn at all. This decision changes which materials are even on the table.
Once placement rules anything out, choose between wood and metal based on look and feel. See our wood vs. metal comparison if you want the tradeoffs spelled out, including individual wood species and grain.
If a name, date, or short inscription matters to you, confirm engraving is available on the specific urn before you commit, since not every design supports it equally well.
If you're memorializing two people or two pets together, look specifically for a companion urn. If you want to divide remains among family members, a keepsake urn alongside the main urn covers that without needing a second full-size urn.
With size, material, and any personalization needs settled, you should be down to a short, manageable list. From here it's a matter of preference — color, finish, and overall style.
