Pet cremation urn size guide
Pet urns use the same underlying principle as adult urns — roughly 1 cubic inch of capacity for every 1 pound of body weight — but with a slightly larger buffer of about 10%, since cremated remains volume can vary more across breeds and bone densities than it does in adults.
Because pets range so widely in size, from a 2 lb hamster to a 150 lb Great Dane, it's usually easier to think in terms of pet size category rather than an exact weight chart. Use the table below to find the right starting point, then check the exact weight if your pet falls near a boundary.
Pet urn size chart by category
| Pet size | Typical weight | Recommended urn size |
|---|---|---|
| Extra small (cats, small birds, hamsters) | Up to 10 lbs | 15 – 20 in³ |
| Small (cats, small dog breeds) | 10 – 25 lbs | 25 – 35 in³ |
| Medium (most dog breeds) | 25 – 60 lbs | 35 – 70 in³ |
| Large (large dog breeds) | 60 – 100 lbs | 70 – 115 in³ |
| Giant breed (Great Dane, Mastiff, etc.) | 100 – 150 lbs | 115 – 170 in³ |
| Over 150 lbs | 150 lbs+ | Oversize urn recommended |
These ranges include the 10% buffer built into the pet formula, so picking any size within your pet's row will comfortably fit.
Why pets need a bigger buffer than adults
Adult human remains are fairly consistent in density and composition, which is why a simple 1:1 ratio works well. Pets vary much more — a dense-boned large breed dog and a smaller, lighter-boned breed at the same weight won't always produce the same volume of remains. The extra 10% buffer used in pet sizing accounts for this variation so you're not left with an urn that's slightly too small.
Metal vs. wood pet urns
The same material difference applies to pet urns as adult urns. Metal pet urns are usually a sealed cavity, so the listed capacity is the full usable space. Wood pet urns, especially ones with a wood box style and lift-off or sliding lid, can lose around 5% of usable space to the lid mechanism. If your pet's calculated size sits right at a wood urn's listed capacity, size up to the next option.
When the chart doesn't quite fit
Mixed breeds, very lean or very heavy pets, or pets right at a size boundary can fall outside a clean category. If you know your pet's exact weight and want a precise number instead of a range, our calculator runs the same 10%-buffer formula instantly and also covers adult and metal vs. wood sizing.

My pet was right between two categories — which size should I choose?
When in doubt, size up rather than down. A slightly larger urn is rarely noticeable, while one that's too small is a real problem.
Do keepsake or mini urns follow the same formula?
No — keepsake urns are intentionally small and are meant to hold only a small portion of remains, often alongside a main urn, rather than the full amount.
Is there a maximum pet urn size?
Most standard pet urns top out around 200 in³ for giant breeds. For anything larger, an oversize or companion pet urn is the better fit.
