Pet urns use the same underlying principle as adult urns — roughly 1 cubic inch of capacity for every 1 pound of body weight — but with a slightly larger buffer of about 10%, since cremated remains volume can vary more across breeds and bone densities than it does in adults.
Because pets range so widely in size, from a 2 lb hamster to a 150 lb Great Dane, it's usually easier to think in terms of pet size category rather than an exact weight chart. Use the table below to find the right starting point, then check the exact weight if your pet falls near a boundary.

Why pets need a bigger buffer than adults
Adult human remains are fairly consistent in density and composition, which is why a simple 1:1 ratio works well. Pets vary much more — a dense-boned large breed dog and a smaller, lighter-boned breed at the same weight won't always produce the same volume of remains. The extra 10% buffer used in pet sizing accounts for this variation so you're not left with an urn that's slightly too small.
Metal vs. wood pet urns
The same material difference applies to pet urns as adult urns. Metal pet urns are usually a sealed cavity, so the listed capacity is the full usable space. Wood pet urns, especially ones with a wood box style and lift-off or sliding lid, can lose around 5% of usable space to the lid mechanism. If your pet's calculated size sits right at a wood urn's listed capacity, size up to the next option.
